Relay For Life is coming to City of Yarra

Friday 25 July, 2008

City of Yarra residents are counting down to Saturday 13 November and the start of what local organisers hope will be one of the biggest fundraising events the area has ever seen - The Cancer Council Victoria's City of Yarra Relay For Life.

"I am a cancer survivor of four years, so I understand the importance of the Cancer Council's work and of fundraising events, such as Relay For Life," said Relay For Life committee member and local resident, Jane Farrelly.

"This is why I'm passionate about the first ever City of Yarra Relay For Life. I strongly recommend everybody gets involved," Ms Farrelly said.

Each year, over 250 locals in the City of Yarra area are diagnosed with cancer.

"I think friends and family can sometimes feel a bit helpless when supporting a friend or loved one with their cancer fight.

"Taking part in City of Yarra Relay For Life is your chance to make a tangible difference - you can show your support for loved ones and raise funds to fight back against cancer," Ms Farrelly said.

At City of Yarra Relay For Life, groups of locals will walk or run their team batons through the night to raise funds for the Cancer Council's research, education and support programs.

Participants and supporters will bring their tents and camp overnight as a community. There will be free entertainment, games the kids can play and spot prizes. Community station, SYN Radio, who has put their support behind the event, will also be in attendance.

Throughout the event, ceremonies will also be held to honour locals who have been touched by cancer.

"At dusk, we will line the track with candles and messages dedicated to loved ones who have faced cancer. We know from other Victorian Relay For Life events that this is always one of the most moving reminders of why we fight cancer," Ms Farrelly said.

City of Yarra Relay For Life will be held at the George Knott Athletics track in Clifton Hill. It will commence at 12pm on Saturday 13 November, with a Carers and Survivors Walk, and conclude at 12pm on Saturday 14 November with a closing ceremony.

Funds raised at City of Yarra Relay For Life will benefit people facing cancer throughout Victoria, including local residents.
