Local girls get together for women in need

Tuesday 4 September, 2007

With around 40 Alpine women facing a cancer diagnosis this year, The Cancer Council Victoria is encouraging local women to show their support by hosting a Girls Night In this October.

"Girls Night In is the Cancer Council's fastest growing fundraising event, and is a great way to raise funds for the fight against women's cancers," The Cancer Council's Barbara Fernandez says. "But just as importantly, it's also a fantastic excuse for a get-together with the girls."

Ms Fernandez says joining in Girls Night In is easy.

"Women simply sign up as a host, then invite their friends around for a ‘Girls Night In' any time in October," she says. "Guests then make a donation to the Cancer Council in return for their great evening in."

"While all our registered hosts are provided a pack of ideas, you really can make the night your own - we've had everything from pamper evenings to movie nights, cooking lessons to karaoke," Ms Fernandez says.

All funds raised through Girls Night In support lifesaving research into breast and gynaecological cancers, education programs that help women both prevent and detect cancer at an early stage, and support services for women in times of great need.

"Last year, we received 38 calls to our 13 11 20 Cancer Council Helpline from Alpine women with questions about cancer," Ms Fernandez says.

"The Cancer Council Helpline is funded by events like Girls Night In, so it's clear to see that when you join in Girls Night In, you really are making a difference to local women facing cancer," she says.

Although Girls Night In is just three years old, women in both rural and metropolitan Victoria have embraced it enthusiastically.

"This year, the Cancer Council anticipates more than 3500 Victorian women will host a Girls Night In and raise an expected total of more than $700, 000," Ms Fernandez says. "It will be a fantastic achievement, and just goes to show what we can achieve when we rally together."
