$1.4 million cuppa key to cancer fight

Wednesday 16 May, 2007

Australians drink more than 22 million cups of tea each year, but with Australia's Biggest Morning Tea coming up on Thursday 24 May, The Cancer Council Victoria is urging Victorian residents to pour themselves another cuppa.

"Everyone loves a cuppa - in fact, after water it's the most widely consumed beverage in the world and has been popular for more than 4000 years," Cancer Council spokesperson Barbara Fernandez said. "But there's no better excuse to put the kettle back on and take a break with friends, family or workmates than Australia's Biggest Morning Tea - after all, every cup counts in the fight against cancer."

Ms Fernandez says joining in Australia's Biggest Morning Tea is easy: "To take part, participants just register as a host at www.biggestmorningtea.com.au or by calling 1300 65 65 85," Ms Fernandez said. "Once they're registered, hosts simply invite workmates, schoolmates, friends or family around for a morning tea, with all funds raised going to the Cancer Council."

This year, more than 170,000 Victorians are expected to join in Australia's Biggest Morning Tea. The funds they raise will play an important role in supporting world-class cancer education programs, lifesaving cancer research, and vital support services for people in times of great need.

"This year, we're aiming to raise more than $1.4 million dollars in Victoria through Australia's Biggest Morning Tea," Ms Fernandez said. "So while joining in Australia's Biggest Morning Tea might be a great excuse to take a break with friends and colleagues, it's also a really significant way to contribute to the fight against cancer."
