Special forum helps people affected by advanced cancer

Friday 2 March, 2007

Learning how to live well while facing the uncertainty of advanced cancer will be the focus of a special forum to be held at The Cancer Council Victoria on Saturday, 24 March.

The free forum covers topics such finance and legal issues, treatment options, clinical trials, support services and family issues.

Advanced cancer is a cancer that won't go away and is unlikely to be cured. However, treatment can keep some advanced cancers under control for months or years, and can help to control symptoms.

Doreen Akkerman, from the Cancer Council's Cancer Information and Support Service said the program covers both emotional and practical information, support and advice to patients and their families.

"When people are facing a really challenging illness and end of life, they go through a great deal of distress and anxiety," Ms Akkerman said.

"The Living Well Forum informs people with advanced cancer and their families ways to communicate with each other, coping strategies and relaxation techniques. It also looks at the formalities such as making sure you have a legal will and that finances are in order."

Ms Akkerman said the Living Well Forum provided an opportunity for people with advanced cancer and their families to speak to others in a similar situation, which can help lessen their feelings of isolation.

The Cancer Council Victoria's Living Well Forum for people with advanced cancer will be held on Saturday 24th March 10.30am - 2.30pm at The Cancer Council Victoria, 100 Drummond Street, Carlton.

Topics will include treatments and medical supports available, financial and legal issues, and living with uncertainty.

The seminar is free, partners, family and friends are invited to attend and refreshments will be provided. Registrations are essential; RSVP by Wednesday, 21 March. For more information or to register, call the Cancer Council Helpline on 13 11 20.
