Geelong Relay For Life expects to reach its fundraising total of more than $2 million raised since the event began, when it holds this year's event at the new Beckley Park venue on 17 & 18 March 2007, and is encouraging locals to join in the celebrations by registering their teams today.
Committee Chair Andrew Purdy said Geelong's Relay spirit has been a key factor in making the event the most successful of its kind in the state.
"I'm confident that despite the obstacles we've come up against this year - namely the drought - our 2007 event will again demonstrate the passion and commitment of our community." Mr Purdy said.
"Over 2,500 people participated in last year's event, raising $354,000," he said. "This figure contributed to an incredible overall fundraising total of $1.6 million raised at Geelong Relay For Life since the event started in 2000."
"All those involved in fundraising should feel enormous pride knowing that they are making a real difference to the almost 1,000 people diagnosed with cancer every year in Geelong."
All money raised by Relay For Life funds cancer research, education and prevention programs and support services for those affected by cancer in Geelong and across the state.
Mr Purdy believes this year's participants will embrace the new venue, Beckley Park.
"Relay For Life is not about a venue but rather about the cancer cause and the survivorship opportunities that are available to cancer patients, survivors, carers and those left behind." he said.
"I urge all those thinking about registering a team to do it now. Together, we can reach $2 million and really impact the cancer fight." Mr Purdy said.
A Team Meeting for anyone registered or wishing to register a team will be held on Wednesday 14 February at 7.30pm at Deakin University's Waurn Ponds Campus in the foyer of the Peter Thwaites Lecture Theatre (LT1).
Relay For Life inspires teams of 10 or more to keep a baton moving around a track overnight. Geelong's Relay For Life is a 24-hour event to be held at Beckley Park on 17 & 18 March 2007.
