Doreen Akkerman's service to cancer patients honoured

Doreren_picDoreen Akkerman, the Director of our Cancer Information and Support Service, has been honoured with an Australia Day award for her work with cancer patients and their families.

Doreen has been created a Member of the Order of Australia.

Doreen has worked for The Cancer Council Victoria since 1990 and has been tireless in her efforts to be there for people with cancer. Doreen was the driving force in setting up the first dedicated Cancer Council Helpline in Australia, after setting up similar ones offshore in Singapore and Canada.

Doreen is also the supervisor of the Breast Cancer Support Service and in this role has helped to educate breast care nurses.

Working with her dedicated team of nurses, Doreen has worked hard to assist those with cancer and those affected by it to ensure they have the most up-to-date information and counselling. Her award is fantastic recognition of her dedication and hard work.
