Gabriel Gate joins the search for teapot with a difference

Thursday 12 April, 2007

Throw out your tea cosies Victoria - The Cancer Council Victoria wants to get a look at your teapot!

Following overwhelming public support for the first ever Australia's Biggest Morning Tea Teapot Competition in 2006, the Cancer Council is once again searching for the state's best, with entries closing on Friday 27 April.

"We started the Australia's Biggest Morning Tea Teapot Competition last year to remind Victorians that as well as being one of the Cancer Council's most important fundraising events, Australia's Biggest Morning Tea is also a lot of fun," Cancer Council spokesperson Barbara Fernandez said. "The Teapot Competition was a huge success, so we've now decided to make it an annual event."

Whether your teapot is the oldest, the one with the most history, part of the state's biggest collection, or even just the one that makes the best cuppa, the Cancer Council wants to hear about it.

"Like Australia's Biggest Morning Tea, the Teapot Competition is an event which all Victorians can join in," Ms Fernandez said. "All you need to do is register to host an Australia's Biggest Morning Tea event and then send us a picture of your teapot with a statement about why it's the state's best."

As well as being named the owner of Victoria's Best Teapot, this year's winner will receive a one-on-one cooking lesson with long-time Australia's Biggest Morning Tea supporter, celebrity chef Gabriel Gate.

"Gabriel is one of the country's best-loved chefs and the private cooking lesson is a great opportunity to learn some new dishes to impress your Australia's Biggest Morning Tea guests," Ms Fernandez said. "Why not join in the fun?"

While Australia's Biggest Morning Tea is on Thursday 24 May, participants can host their event at any time in May. This year, the Cancer Council hopes that Victorians will raise more than $1.3 million for the fight against cancer by hosting Australia's Biggest Morning Tea events in their workplaces, at home, or at school. Funds raised through the event will play a vital role in supporting lifesaving cancer research, education programs that help Victorians both prevent cancers and detect them at a stage when they are most curable, and important support programs for people in times of great need.

Entries for the Australia's Biggest Morning Tea Teapot Competition close at 5pm on Friday 27 April. Entrants should post or email a photo of their teapot, accompanied by an entry form detailing why their teapot is Victoria's best.
