It’s hard to fathom that 1999 was a quarter-century ago—a year that brought us unforgettable moments in entertainment and incredible community spirit. This was the year Titanic captivated audiences worldwide, and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone soared to the top of the New York Times bestseller list.
This same year, in the heart of Murrumbeena, a new tradition began as the first-ever Australian Relay for Life kicked off.
The inaugural event drew 37 spirited teams and raised an impressive $60,000 for cancer research. Attendees were treated to a vibrant array of jazz and rock performances, creating an electrifying atmosphere over the 24-hour celebration. A poignant candlelight ceremony, honouring loved ones lost to cancer, became a cherished part of the event, a tradition that continues to inspire and unite the community today.

Rhonda started her Relay journey in 2004 after being diagnosed with a very aggressive breast cancer in 2002 and enduring seven months of intense chemotherapy.
“It was my family and friends who got me through in the early days. I wasn’t ready to go yet, my kids were too little. I had to fight. I was determined,” said Rhonda.

“I’ve been privileged to attend many events over the years. I’ve been a candle lighter, read the oath, won an individual fundraising award, won awards for best decorated and best dressed team. On the tenth anniversary of Relay for Life I was asked to read the oath at Federation Square.
“Being a survivor gave me the determination to fight back, to do the best I can, to help others, and pay back. I don’t think I’ll ever stop, because it means so much to me. I just want to raise money for research and hope that we can help others,” concluded Rhonda.
