I have been caring for my ex-husband since November last year as the hospital told me he was in the last stages of his cancer. He was given oxygen 24 hours 7 days. I was thinking, "What should I do to make his life more fulfilling?"
There were times he felt like giving up and putting himself into a nursing home, as he was thinking it was too much for me to look after him.
In December last year I was chatting to a friend about getting him a pet bird, which I did. I'm so shocked how this young bird has taken to him and my ex husband has taken to the bird, which he named Sam.
Since Sam's been here my ex-husband thinks about him more and seems to cheer up a lot. Tonight he was so happy that Sam came out of his cage and sat on his finger. I took a photo of them both together and the smile on his face was priceless, as was the way Sam would just sit there so happy with him.
This has shown me there is hope for someone with cancer to smile again, and also I have learnt not to give up on life. One thing I have learnt is that animals are just amazing and they can make a sick person feel good inside no matter what they're going through.
