Victorian Childhood Cancer Family Study

Lead researcher

Professor John Hopper, Dr Elizabeth Smibert, Dr Anne Mitchell & Dr Keith Waters

Years funded
2006

We are interviewing the parents of children with cancer, and asking if relatives have had cancer, and, if so, what type of cancer and at what age.

We will compare these cancer family histories with those of men and women of the same age whose children do not have cancer. This data will be used for future estimation of cancer risks for relatives of children with cancer. It will also help to find causes of childhood cancers, and may help identify new cancer genes.

We are establishing a comprehensive resource that can be used to examine the genetic epidemiology of childhood cancer from a population-based perspective, similar to our groundbreaking and highly successful work in breast cancer.
