Experiences of care of adolescents & young adults (AYAs) with cancer: health professionals consultation

Murdoch Childrens Research Institute: Healthier Kids. Healthier Future

Principal Investigators: Dr Vicki White and Dr Michael Coory

Cancer Council Victoria and Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, in collaboration with AYA cancer services from New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria, are developing a new survey for young people with cancer. The survey will ask 15 to 24 year-olds about their cancer care experience at each stage of the cancer journey.

We are currently conducting telephone interviews with health professionals to guide the development of this survey.

If you have knowledge or experience of AYA cancer, work in the public, private, or not-for-profit sectors, and belong to one or more of the following groups, we'd like you to participate:

  • Nurses and cancer care coordinators
  • Psychologists and social workers
  • Allied health staff and patient advocates
  • Quality managers
  • Psycho-oncology researchers
  • Staff working with AYAs from rural or regional areas.

What does participation involve?

You're invited to take part in a phone interview to share your opinions about AYA cancer care. The interview will last for 30 to 40 minutes and will be audio-recorded. You'll also be asked to comment on a sample survey which will be emailed to you in advance. Participation is completely voluntary, and should you choose to participate, you can withdraw at any time.

What will happen to my information?

Any information that you give us will be kept private and confidential.  Your name will be replaced by a number in our records, and no individual patient, health professional, or service will be identifiable in any report or publication. Your decision to participate (or not) will also be confidential.

Who do I contact?

If you'd like to participate, email your details to Helen Bibby, Project Coordinator at Helen.Bibby@cancervic.org.au. Helen will contact you to arrange an interview time that's convenient for you. You can also call Helen on 03 9514 6465 if you have any questions about this project.

All aspects of this research project have been approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee of Cancer Council Victoria. If you have any complaints or concerns about the manner in which this research is being conducted, please contact Ms Nicola Quin, Executive Officer of the Human Research Ethics Committee, on (03) 514 6340 or email Nicola.Quin@cancervic.org.au.
