SunSmart and i ski for tommy (isft.) are joining forces this year to remind cyclists to protect themselves when riding in Australia's premier mass participation bike ride, Around the Bay, on Sunday 16th October.
SunSmart Manager, Sue Heward, advises all cyclists riding in the event to remember to check the SunSmart UV Alert before the ride and be prepared.
"You can't rely on temperature to know when the ultraviolet (UV) radiation is at damaging levels, so it's a good idea to check the SunSmart UV Alert and during the sun protection times remember to protect yourself by wearing a long sleeved jersey, plenty of sunscreen, sunglasses and by taking rest stops in the shade," said Ms. Heward
"Being prepared and taking a few moments to re-apply sunscreen during the ride makes a big difference in sun protection and little difference in your competitiveness," says Ms Heward.
Isft., a charity founded in memory of 23 year old Victorian, Tom Mathias, who died of melanoma in 2009, will have a team riding in the event. Citing Tommy's sporting prowess, Dr. Mark Cicchiello, founder of isft, said; "Around the Bay is an appropriate means to raise awareness about melanoma in Tommy's memory as it acknowledges his well-rounded abilities, given he excelled in many facets of life beyond his winter pursuits."
