National Volunteer Week
National Volunteer Week (10 - 16 May) provides a fantastic opportunity to recognise and celebrate the contribution volunteers make to Cancer Council Victoria.
Thousands of volunteers help Cancer Council Victoria every year. From fundraising to clinical advice and administration, volunteers form a formidable army of helpers. Some notable figures from 2009 include:
- 160 people who have experienced cancer who volunteered for Cancer Connect, our telephone peer-support program
- 7800 people volunteered at a Daffodil Day stall or sold merchandise to family and friends
- 31 volunteer units from all around Victoria who generously donated their time and effort to fundraising efforts
- 3000 volunteers to help Pink Ribbon Day raise funds to fight breast cancer
- 43 organisations who took part in our Corporate Volunteering program
- 450 specialists who participate in our Victorian Cooperative Oncology Group
- 44 volunteers who donated their time to answer 16,340 calls to our Supporters Hotline.
Professor David Hill AO, Director, Cancer Council Victoria, said that volunteers were an integral part of the organisation.
"We rely on volunteers for a countless number of large and small tasks. They provide us with the assistance we need to continue our work in cancer support, prevention and research," Professor Hill said.
"This week, National Volunteer Week, I wish to say a very large ‘Thank You' to all those who help us to ease the burden of cancer on the Victorian community. Their ongoing support is greatly appreciated."
National Volunteer Week is an initiative of Volunteering Australia.
