Celebration gifts: Gifts in lieu
Many people choose to request donations to the Cancer Council instead of gifts for birthdays, weddings and anniversaries. These donations are called Gift in Lieu donations.
By requesting a donation to the Cancer Council in lieu of gifts, you’ll help thousands of Victorians facing cancer.
A gift in lieu will help us continue our fight against cancer.
You can ask friends and family to donate instead of giving gifts for your special occasion.
When a Gift in Lieu donation is made, a gift card with the donor's name and message will be sent to the person celebrating their special occasion. The donated amount is not included on the card. Donations of $2 or more are tax deductible.
How do I participate?
You can participate in two ways:
- Receive gifts in lieu
Ask guests to make a donation to Cancer Council Victoria instead of giving you gifts. To register, call 1300 65 65 85 (9am - 5pm Monday to Friday). You'll receive Gift in Lieu envelopes to include with your invitations.
- Give gifts in lieu
Donate to us instead of giving gifts or wedding bonbonnieres. Contact us to register your donation. We’ll work with you to create a gift card with your message to notify family and friends of your donation on their behalf. Donations of $2 or more are tax deductible.

Fund a research award
Research Awards are a chance to fund a specific type of cancer research. Your Research Award will help fund a Cancer Council research grant at a leading Victorian hospital, university, or research centre.
Donors and fundraising supporters who contribute $5,000 or more are invited to accept a Research Award. The award can be in your name, your organisation’s name, or can be named in honor of someone you care about. You will be acknowledged for your generosity in the Cancer Council Annual Review.
Types of Research Awards:
- Donor Research Award
For donors contributing $5,000 or more in a given year or wanting to fund a continuing Research Award.
- Fundraising Research Award
For fundraising individuals or teams raising $5,000 or more in a year, who choose to allocate this money towards a particular cancer research area.
- Corporate Research Award
For corporations that make a donation of $10,000 or more in any given year.
