Clinical Network celebrates 40 years working with Victorian cancer clinicians and cancer care advocates

The Clinical Network has come a long way since our establishment in 1976. We have changed our name, purpose and structure and evolved substantially, reflecting the changing cancer landscape in Victoria.  We were established as the Victorian Chemotherapy Cooperative Group (VCCG) and evolved to the Victorian Cooperative Oncology Group in 1981. The original purpose was to discuss the management of solid tumours requiring chemotherapy, a fairly new method of treatment in Victoria at the time.

Today the Clinical Network aims to support our members to collectively advocate for practice change for a variety of cancer treatment related issues, affecting both patients and clinicians. We encourage you to get in touch with us with your issues or opportunities.  Some ideas about how we can assist you:

  • We establish working parties and steering groups to write submissions or letters to relevant government bodies and stakeholders. For example last year we developed a response to the Senate Inquiry regarding ‘The availability of new, innovative and specialist drugs in Australia’. More of our policy work can be found here
  • We hold workshops, roundtable discussions and think-tanks. Some of these have led to collaborative projects.  We also established an Alliance of 38 cancer, chronic disease and patient support organisations to advocate for improvements to the Victorian Patient Transport Assistance Scheme for people who need to travel long distances to access medical treatment.
  • We undertake research projects. Currently, we are undertaking a mapping project to ascertain the current landscape of Cancer Care Coordinators in Victoria.  This includes identifying geographical locations in which these roles operate and current scope of practice. Completed work includes the Additional Funding Intervention Trial in 2015; an exploration of the relationship between funding and patient accrual to oncology clinical trials.
