Carers are essential for ensuring treatment compliance, continuity of care and assisting the healthcare system. It is estimated that the annual replacement value to Australia is over $60.3 billion (Access Economics, economic value of informal care 2015). Improved information and comprehension of available support has shown to help caregivers to people with cancer. (Wilkinson 2010). Cancer Council Victoria’s recently updated free Carers Kit aims to help reduce the impact on carers and connect them into relevant support networks.
The free kit contains our Caring for Someone with Cancer booklet, information from Centrelink and an overview of all the information and support services offered by Cancer Council Victoria. We also include a relaxation CD developed by Australian psychologist, Dr Lisbeth Lane, to guide through a series of simple exercises.
Cancer Council Victoria has a suite of over 70 booklets, factsheets and DVDs providing evidence-based information for the public about cancer types, treatments and support. Regularly updated by clinicians and consumers, the material is relied on by many oncology health professionals to complement discussions with patients helping them to understand issues they may face at diagnosis, treatment and life after treatment.
You can order copies of the Carers Kit for your patients by calling 13 11 20 and speaking with a Cancer Council nurse.
