Message from our CEO

Cancer Council Victoria CEO Todd Harper2016 marks a very special year for Cancer Council Victoria, it sees us celebrate our 80th anniversary, a milestone that prompts reflection on the changes we have seen through our collective efforts.

I wanted to take this opportunity to dedicate this edition of Breakthrough Bulletin to our 80th anniversary.

The people are what I think makes Cancer Council such a fantastic organisation to be a part of, from our staff, our researchers, our volunteers and importantly, our supporters.

Without the generosity of our supporters we would not have been able to make the enormous impact in cancer control that we have in the last 80 years, thank you to all of you.

The inroads we have made in 80 years really are phenomenal.

  • 5 year cancer survival rates are currently at an all-time high, with 67% of all people diagnosed with cancer surviving for at least five years.
  • Smoking rates are lower than they’ve ever been, with less than 13% of the population now smoking.
  • We continue to fund the brightest research minds, investing over $23m in research each year.

Whilst the last 80 years have established us at the forefront of cancer control, the future is even more important as we continue our pioneering efforts against this devastating disease. I do hope you will continue on the journey with us.
