Smokefree dining legislation – a welcome breath of fresh air

Sunday 23 August, 2015

Quit Victoria welcomes the Victorian Government’s announcement today to introduce smokefree outdoor dining across the state by 1 August 2017.

Quit Victoria Acting Director Kylie Lindorff said any addition to smokefree areas was a step in the right direction.

“This is a positive announcement. There is no safe level of exposure to second-hand smoke so we hope that this proposal will protect staff and patrons in all outdoor dining and drinking areas.

“Seventy percent of the Victorian public support smokefree outdoor dining and drinking and economic data has shown that the introduction of smokefree areas is good for business,” said Ms Lindorff.

A Cancer Council Victoria survey* of more than 4000 Victorians found almost half (49%) of Victorians said they had avoided an outdoor dining area due to smoking in the previous year.

“We look forward to delving into the detail of the proposal and understanding how it will work in outdoor dining and drinking areas,” said Ms Lindorff.
