A statement from Cancer Council Victoria CEO, Todd Harper

We are saddened to learn of the passing of Dean Bailey from lung cancer.

This is a devastating disease, which remains the fourth most common new cancer in Victoria and the leading cause of all cancer deaths.

Mr Bailey had such a significant impact on the football world – first in his days as a player at Essendon Football Club, then in coaching roles at Essendon, Port Adelaide, Melbourne and Adelaide football clubs.

He was the coach of Melbourne when that football club faced off against Essendon in our Call to Arms match in 2008. This annual event is all about raising awareness of cancer in men, and the impact cancer has on our community.

Our thoughts go out to Dean's family, particularly his wife Caron and children, his many friends and colleagues.
