New Cancer Council research shows the majority of people support stripping cigarette packs of their branding and colour.
- Seven out of ten people (72.6%) approve of plain packaging (smokers and non-smokers combined)
- Additionally - over half (56.9%) of smokers approve of plain packaging
The research comes hot on the heels of yesterday's announcement from Health Minister Nicola Roxon revealing what cigarette packaging could look like from next year under newly unveiled plain packaging legislation.
Quit Executive Director Fiona Sharkie said it was imperative that all politicians support this important tobacco control measure that already had the support of the majority of people.
"The overwhelming support for plain packaging, indicated by this research, should give politicians a flavour of just how popular this legislation will be amongst constituents."
"As other forms of tobacco advertising have been banned, cigarette packaging has become the most important marketing vehicle the industry has to attract potential smokers. Plain packaging will end this deadly form of promotion," Ms Sharkie said.
"Plain packaging will help bring down smoking rates, especially among teenagers, and is supported by seven out of ten people. The fact that even the majority of smokers want to see plain packaging in place shows what wide support the policy has."
If the bill is passed, it will be mandatory for all cigarettes to be sold in plain packs by June 2012.
"Tobacco is a deadly product that kills half of all long term users. It's not a normal consumer product, so we shouldn't allow it to be packaged like one," Ms Sharkie said.
The Cancer Council Victoria research is based on a survey of 4,500 Victorian adults in November 2010.
