Why it's great to work at the Cancer Council

1. High regard

We're trusted and recognised internationally for our research, prevention and patient support work. People like to volunteer and work here for the prestige, to give back to an organisation that's helped others, and to know their work will be needed and welcomed by the community.

2. Competitive pay, salary packaging and conditions

We offer:

  • competitive salaries and annual increases aligned with the external market
  • salary packaging (of rent, credit card, mortgage, school fees, etc. to a maximum of $16,050 per annum)
  • a commitment to ongoing professional development
  • discounted ambulance membership
  • internal promotion and transfer opportunities.

3. Flexible hours

Staff can vary their start and finish times to suit. Are you an early riser, or do you work best in the evenings? You can negotiate flexible hours or alternative leave arrangements. We also offer (after 12 months service):

  • 12 months maternity leave (including 12 weeks paid leave and the ability to request part-time opportunities)
  • 5 days paid paternity leave (or 12 months if the staff member is the primary caregiver).

4. Career development

  • Internal promotions are encouraged and all positions are advertised on the Intranet.
  • There are seminars and presentations at lunchtime, including guest speakers (researchers) and superannuation seminars.
  • Annual performance reviews are linked to training and development.

5. Staff training

We're committed to creating a skilled and motivated workforce. We offer:

  • probation, performance review and development action plans
  • access to internal and external training programs
  • on-the-job training
  • an induction and orientation program.

6. Respect for diversity

We foster a culture that accepts and respects diversity in staff and volunteers. We train and support Equal Opportunity Officers, offer cultural diversity training, employ Multilingual Education Officers and provide multilingual resources.

7. Encouraging achievement

Our performance review process for each staff member occurs over a yearly cycle. Performance objectives, stretch goals and development action plans set at the start of the year are reviewed according to achievement. Staff meetings acknowledge staff and program achievement.

8. Valuing volunteers

We're very proud to be a volunteer-based organisation; our work wouldn't be possible without them.

We have 40,000 volunteers across Victoria, about 235 of them work in our offices. Volunteers are recruited for specific roles and training and orientation is available. Volunteers are supervised by paid staff members, and role descriptions are developed for all office-based volunteers. Corporate volunteering is also available.

9. Health and wellbeing

We provide:

  • Employee Assistance Program: paid for by the Cancer Council, with 24-hour, 7-day access
  • team debriefing (with managers or colleagues)
  • yoga at lunchtimes
  • a bicycle user group and facilities to encourage riding to work (showers, bike racks, lockers) and participation in Ride to Work Day
  • BRW Triathlon corporate entry
  • a Nutrition and Physical Activity Policy
  • free flu vaccinations
  • a smokefree workplace that promotes a healthy lifestyle
  • a social committee that supports networking by offering staff activities and events.

The world famous Exhibition Building and surrounding gardens are across the road. We're a short walk to Parliament Station, Exhibition Street trams and Rathdowne/Exhibition Street buses.
