Cancer Research Vacation Studentships are available to undergraduate students enrolled in relevant disciplines at any Victorian university.
The student's work must be done as part of a cancer research program conducted at a university or other research organisation. The studentship placements are for up to 6 weeks during the summer vacation and are valued at $250 per week.
Twenty studentships at a total value of around $27,000 have been awarded for the 2009-10 summer vacation.
Applications for the summer vacation 2009-10 have closed. The next round will be offered in August 2010.
Cancer Council Victoria is an independent, volunteer-based charity established in 1936. Our mission is to lead the fight against cancer. Our core business is cancer control. We conduct and support research as well as delivering statewide support and prevention programs and advocating regulation and other interventions to reduce the physical and emotional burden of cancer.
We are offering a number of Cancer Research Vacation Studentships with the object of stimulating interest in cancer research in Victoria.
The studentships will be available as follows:
1. Who can apply?
Undergraduate students enrolled in relevant disciplines at any Victorian University. Students are not eligible after completing their final year, except for 3rd year science students who are proceeding to the 4th year of an honours degree. Overseas students are eligible to apply but need to have a student visa that allows limited work to be undertaken.
2. How long does the studentship last and when is it for?
The period of tenure is up to a maximum of 6 weeks during the summer vacation.
3. How much will be paid?
Studentship holders will receive $250 per week. A class ruling has been obtained in relation to the income tax status of the Studentships. Provided various conditions are met, our studentships are exempt from income tax. The class ruling is No. CR 2002/4 effective from 1 December 2001. 4. How many studentships will be offered?
Approximately twenty studentships are available. No more than two studentships will be funded at the same laboratory.
5. Where do I find placement?
The studentship project needs to be part of a cancer research program being conducted at a university or other research organisation. Search our archive of cancer research funded for examples of projects and researchers who may help you.
You need to contact cancer researchers and ask whether there are any projects available for you to work on that they would be willing to supervise. Your university department or Faculty Office, or the Office for Research, may also have suggestions of organisations where cancer research is carried out.
The application form provides for both a description of the work to be done and a written acceptance by the supervisor. Before completing the description of the work proposed to be undertaken, you should consult with the person who will supervise the work.
6. How do I apply?
Applications should be on the official form. A photocopy of your full examination results should be included. If you have not yet received this semester/year's results, provide your most recent ones.

7. What else is required?
Successful applicants are required to write a short report on their placement covering the work carried out and the benefits and experience gained.
