In 2008, the overwhelming majority of Victorians (96%) believe that smokefree cars and homes are important to protect the family from the dangers of secondhand smoke. The results from the present study show that smokers’ smoking behaviour in homes and around children has significantly improved in the last 11 years. However, 28% of smokers still smoke inside, and 44% still smoke around children, suggesting that continued tobacco control initiatives addressing the issue of SHS exposure are warranted.
Smoking prevalence in Victoria has declined significantly over the past 11 years, in concert with a range of significant tobacco control legislative and policy interventions.
Smoking rates amongst prisoners are considerably higher than the general community, with a recent study in NSW prisons suggesting as many as 79% of prisoners are current smokers1. Prisoner populations face unique and significant challenges with regard to smoking cessation. In response to the unique needs of prisoner populations, Quit Victoria partnered with Corrections Victoria in 1998 to develop a tailored smoking cessation program for prisoners, entitled “Quitters are Winners”. This evaluation covers Quitters are Winners courses run from 2002 to 2007 across seven prisons around Victoria.
